PROBLEM SOLVING GROUPS

Problem-solving workshops aim to promote innovative collaborative research inspired by real use-cases from current or new partners of the  BIOS² program. Research activities leading to the production of various deliverables can be supported, such as the development of indicators of  biodiversity and ecosystem health status or changes, decision-supporting tools, open-data infrastructure, data analysis and visualization  pipelines. A strong emphasis is given to problems that are of strategic  importance to partners and with concrete applications of research outputs.

The workshops pursue the following objectives :

  • Improve capacities for biodiversity and ecosystem services monitoring of our partners with provision of top-level expertise in computational biodiversity science.
  • Provide training opportunities for BIOS² fellows, in particular on ecological synthesis, leadership and collaborative research on problems of practical importance.

Problem solving groups give opportunities for partners to work with fellows and researchers on applied problems and formulate potential solutions. Each problem solving group will consist of up to 7 fellows, 1 co-applicant researcher, 1 collaborator and 1 invited international researcher widely recognized for its expertise in the area of interest.

Maximum value of financial support:

  • $5.000 per working group (will be administered by the BIOS² co-applicant).
  • BIOS² will fund 1 problem-solving group per year.

Application process:

  • An annual call for propositions for problem-solving workshops will be announced in April. The call for applications will be sent to our  collaborators and posted on the website.
  • The application must be conducted by a non-academic partner, under the  supervision of a BIOS² co-applicant.
  • The selection is based on the above objectives and applications must  respect the program rules for diversity and equity.
